In our case, we want to make it possible for ordinary people to use the computer as an unobtrusive extension of their own capabilities. The computer will materially support an expanded personal information space—one’s knowledge home—and provide the additional processing power needed to structure and manage it. But these resources will have to be matched, on the human individual’s side, by the acquisition of substantial new skills and traditions.
